Rebuilt Geeps |
Description: |
One of the Morristown & Erie's recent acquisitions awaits work alongside one of NJ Transit's commuter diesels. ME 23 started off life on the ATSF before heading to the northern Maine woods to work the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad. NJT 4212 was built as an EMD demonstrator unit before going to work for Penn Central and later Conrail. Both are rebuilds, 23 by the Santa Fe from a GP-7 and 4212 from a GP40 by Conrail for NJ Transit. |

ME 23 |
Description: |
One of the visitors to this year's URHS Transportation Heritage Festival was the Morristown & Erie's recently acquired and restored GP-7u. Built by EMD as a high nosed GP-7 in 1952 for the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, this unit was later rebuilt to extend its service life on the Santa Fe's lines in the American West. Retired in favor of more modern units, it was sold to the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad of northern Maine and continued to work local freights for both BAR and successor Montreal Maine & Atlantic. Purchased by the M&E at auction last summer, this unit will soon be transferred to the Morristown & Erie's Bayway operation at Linden, NJ. |
