STRT 10 |
Description: |
This old GE has seen quite a bit of action over the years. Built in 1946 for the Coudersport & Port Allegany of northern Pennsylvania, it also served on the Wellsville Addison & Galeton Railroad before being acquired by the Stewartstown Railroad in 1972. Before it could move to new home rails in southern York County Hurricane Agnes struck, taking out the Northern Central line with it. With the STRT's only rail connection severed, number 10 was leased to the Lykens Valley Railroad for a little over a decade as well as spending a few years on Rail Tours Inc. excursions at Jim Thorpe. Finally in 1985, the STRT got their locomotive once the railroad took over operations on the Northern Central in addition to their original line between Stewartstown and New Freedom. |

The Junction |
Description: |
At one time it was common to see fast freight and passenger trains of the Pennsylvania Railroad rushing back and forth between Baltimore, MD and Sunbury, PA along the Northern Central. A small yard was maintained here for freight interchange with the tiny Stewartstown Railroad as well as a passenger station serving both operations. Today the old station sees only the trains of excursion operator Steam Into History recalling a much simpler time, in addition to the many bikers and joggers on the parallel rail trail. The Stewartstown Railroad is also looking to rebuild its own tracks from Stewartstown back to this location as well. |

Description: |
The Stewartstown Railroad's 44-ton switcher looks right at home along this country railroad line. The Coudersport & Port Allegany Railroad of Coudersport, PA purchased this locomotive new from General Electric in 1946 for operation along their line in the northern part of the state. Acquired by the Stewartstown in 1972 from the Wellsville Addison & Galeton Railroad, it was unable to reach new home rails until 1985 due to damage to the Northern Central line caused by Hurricane Agnes. It is the last surviving locomotive from the long abandoned C&PA. |

VALE 0800 |
Description: |
This 44-ton locomotive rolled out of the General Electric facility at the end of 1950 and began its long career serving railroads in the northeast. Numbered 400, it began its duties as the Long Island Railroad shop switcher at Morris Park, the only 44-ton switcher ever to grace the the New York area railroad's roster. Retired from active duty in 1963, the unit was acquired for use on the Black River & Western Railroad, an upstart tourist operation on the PRR Flemington Branch in New Jersey. The 400 would work in both passenger and switching operations there as the BRW would not become a freight carrier until 1970. It would also be the first of three locomotives to carry the number 400 on Black River's roster. In 1969 another upstart tourist operation, the Valley Railroad, acquired the locomotive for operations based in Essex, CT on a former New Haven branch line. It was then that the historic unit received its New Haven like paint scheme and number. Replaced by larger GE built 80-ton units, the locomotive was acquired in 1996 by the museum. |
