NYC 2500 |
Description: |
The U25B model was General Electric's first successful road diesel locomotive built for domestic use after the company split from its partnership with Alco, and an attempt at competition with other builders including rival EMD. Part of the Universal series of locomotives, 478 were produced between 1959 and 1966. Number 2500 was built in 1964, the first constructed for the New York Central Railroad and one of two that still exist from a fleet that eventually totalled seventy. Out of the 478 built, only six of these locomotives survive today. |
