WCRL 9
Resting among the vintage rail equipment in the Nields St. yard is this GE built 65-ton switcher. Constructed in 1941 for the US Army as their number 7079, it was later sold to a private owner and moved to the Black River & Western Railroad of Ringoes, NJ. While at the Black River, it was used to help teach mechanical shop classes for students at North Hunterdon High School. The unit's next assignment was freight operations on the Octoraro Railway and affiliate Anthracite Railway in Pennsylvania. At the time this photo was taken, the unit was owned by the West Chester Railway Heritage Association and not in operating condition. As the West Chester Railroad operates on a former PRR branch, the paint scheme of the locomotive is similar to those worn by the Pennsy's own fleet of GE 44-ton switchers. In 2013, little number 9 was sold off to a private owner and left the West Chester Railroad for Delaware.
